A Birthday Verse to my Dear Dorothy (1982)

A family poem by Mike — faithfully transcribed and preserved.

Typed transcription

How the trees have shed their sunset leaves,
And morning air tells Autumn’s here,
Migrating birds wing to warmer eaves,
But robins stay to give us Xmas cheer.

Winds and rain combine in telling me
I must fashion, dear, my birthday verse
To the one with whom I live and love—
My friend, companion, wife, and gentle nurse.

If only we could check the race of time,
The years speed on, youth is far behind;
With our memories—how can I regret
Life shared with one so good and kind?

A Happy Birthday to my love and all,
I cannot give the presents you deserve,
Until my fortunes change (as they do),
My fondest thoughts and love will have to serve.
